Weekly community outings in the Early Intervention Program encompass many environments and many goals and objectives. Outings can range from recreation and leisure activities like spring hiking and swimming to skill-building activities at Target, the grocery store, etc. Any location in the community that a student may find himself or herself with his or her family is targeted. During the community outings, functional goals will be developed and worked on by teachers. Community outings take place once per week and usually last the entire day.
In addition to our full-day community outings, each student attends lessons or classes in the community. For example, students may attend weekly gymnastic lessons or swimming lessons. Students are integrated into the lesson with typically developing peers. EI teachers assist each student during the lesson and help create opportunities for students to learn and grow from these interactions. Creating an opportunity to create relationships and learn from typically developing peers is an important component to a comprehensive program for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
