Early Intervention Program
Welcome to the Early Intervention (EI) Program at The Joshua School! Our program is designed to provide the highest quality of individualized treatment and care for young children with autism spectrum disorders and related developmental disabilities. According to the National Institute of Mental health, autism spectrum disorders can often be reliably detected by the age of three years and in some cases as early as 18 months. Although there may be concerns about labeling a young child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the earlier the diagnosis of ASD is made, the earlier important and needed interventions can begin. Evidence over the past 15 years indicates that intensive early intervention in optimal educational settings for at least two years during the preschool years results in improved outcomes in most young children with ASD. (Filipek PA, et al, 1999)
The EI program is year-round, serves children 2½ years through 6 years of age, and offers 30 hours per week of intensive early intervention. We work collaboratively with families to identify priorities, develop educational objectives, and evaluate program outcomes. The program is built on principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), a science with over thirty years of research known to increase communication, learning, and appropriate social behaviors.
We offer services from highly dedicated and qualified professionals in the fields of Applied Behavior Analysis, Speech and Language Pathology, Early Childhood Education, Special Education, Occupational Therapy, and Music Therapy. In addition, students in the program experience weekly opportunities to interact with typically developing peers in the community. Families are offered quarterly home visits where they have a chance to develop goals and strategies to use in their home.
